This piece of art has caught my attention since the first day of class. It is the one that i chose to talk about when we had to pick a piece of art to discuss. It caught my eye, becuse it is something very out of the ordinary. It is the first time that i personally have ever seen children suckling a wolf. Even though the sculpture is kind of weird, the story behind it is very interesting. It's pretty crazy that a wolf could raise the founder of Rome.
Yeah this is a weird one indeed. Where the hell did this sculpture/carving come from? And how old is it? I found a little info here==> http://www.unrv.com/culture/romulus-and-remus.php I'm not fond of the old greek/roman fairy tales, because they are just that. It seems like they couldn't explain how some things happened, so they made up these stories to make them feel like they had an explanation.....
Reminder: Make sure that 1 of your comments has evidence of research...you must cite your source. Some of you are losing points for not having this....just fyi.
The first time I saw this statue and heard the story was when I was in Italy and we went to Rome. I found it to be kind of absurd that such a thing could have happened, but that is the story that the people of Rome have grown up with. I didn't pay much attention to this statue when I saw it, but I probably would have if I knew what I know now. The orginal statue is located at the Pallazio Del Coservatori in Rome, Italy. Here's a website with a replica in Georgia and another website with a little more information as to the founding of Rome.
A quick comment on artperson's entry... All cultures make up stories about how the world and their civilization began. They are called creation myths. As the civilization spreads, the original creation myth is almost always maintained--think of Adam and Eve. Before people had to ability to investigate things scientificly, everybody made up stories about how things worked. Romulus and Remus are the basis for the creation myth of the Roman civilazation. Personally, I love Romulus and Remus. For the Romans, they were the ideal rulers. The story not only explains who Rome was founded, but it gives the Romans a prototype for all other rulers. For more about R and R, and a source for Roman history, chechttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romulusk out this website.
I find this sculpture kind of disturbing. When I first saw it I didn't really like it, but for some reason I had this feeling it would be on the blog. Also, was it that , "During a quarrel where Remus mocked the height of the walls, and Romulus slew Remus and became the sole ruler of the new Rome,"(1) or was the "dispute about which one of the two brothers had the support of the local gods to rule the new city and give it his name"(2)There are a few diff answers for why they are fighting, however, Remus always dies at the end.
I find this statue very original.:) It's history is very interesting but the staute itself is disturbing. I have no idea who made or who would want to make something like this. I know that some people even have copies of this made for their homes....strange...yes. But it's interesting how they would try to explain how their culture came about and came up with a she-wolf and two babes.
Apparently, the lack of motherly figures was not limited to these infants. There are various stories of a lack of women across the region. Which, supposedly lead the early city of Rome to invite tribes of women to a gathering. At which point, they captured and raped many of them. If this story has any truth to it, it would seem the reality of the event could have been much worse.
This sculpture was obviously very important to the people of Rome. It makes me wonder why they felt the need to make humans seem so connected to an animal in nature. I feel like throughout time we have found value in having relationships with pets and valuing animals in general. Romulus and Remus made we think of the Jungle Book, because of the way that both stories are centered around a human being raised by a wolf. This story is an interesting idea for Rome coming into existence. http://www.pantheon.org/articles/r/romulus.html
This piece of art is definately different. I don't like the statue as that two human babies are suckling from a wolf. I like the story because it explains how Rome was founded and it explains who they were and give you some of the history of Rome. However, I really don't like the part that the wolf found them and fed them with her own milk and all that. But either way, the story does give us some great perspective of the history.
Marc, there was a lack of women in the region at the time. The Rape of the Sabine Women--in this case rape means taking--was orchestrated by Romulus and Remus. There weren't enough women for the Roman men to have brides. Thus, they planned a party and invited the Sabines. Well, low and behold, they ran off with all the Sabine women. Ergo, the Roman men had brides.
This is quite one of the most interesting and weird mythologies back in Roman times, but thinking of it is not rare that children might have been nursed by animals like a female wolf, some say that they had maternal instinct and can treat a young baby or child as a cub of her own, although is not likely they lived with the female wolf till they were in the teens, there is diverse myths and possible facts about this, but for now we just can enjoy this nice piece of art in bronze.

First of all I want to say awesome blog! I had a quick question that I'd like to ask if you do not mind. I was curious to find out how you center yourself and clear your mind prior to writing. I have had difficulty clearing my thoughts in getting my thoughts out. I truly do enjoy writing but it just seems like the first 10 to 15 minutes are usually lost just trying to figure out how to begin. Any ideas or hints? Many thanks!
