Chartres Cathedral

Check out this website for a great map of the stained glass windows located in the choir.

Click on the names in the diagram for a detailed overview of the window. You can also click on the image of the window for a super detailed image (these are beautiful!) with narrative.

Comments due by Monday 12-3.

I really love stained glass windows. I like the Chartres Cathedral Windows: Signs of the Zodiac and Labors of the Months. I didn't know zodiac signs have been around for so long.

These windows are beautiful. It's kind of hard to see them in person with out getting a stiff neck; you spend most of your time with your head tilted back. Other than that, it's wonderful. Myself, I prefer larger scale windows. This link gives you a good introduction to stained glass windows. If you scroll down, you can see plenty of examples of stained glass http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stained_glass. Enjoy.

I do think stained glass windows, and/or stained glass anything (like lamps with Frank Lloyd Wright designs) are very beautiful. Although, like in some of the cathedrals we have seen, I'm not fond of so many tiny pieces, all with different colors for the most part. It makes it look too busy for my taste, but they are beautiful in their entirety.

I'm a really big fan of the Thomas Becket window...just the detail....amazing....and the story that goes along with it....just all the people involved!

I noticed a trend in many of these windows that I don't know if it borders on sacrilege, but it caught my eye. The windows have a time line of events that progress upwards, but they always start with the windows donors at the bottom. As if to say..

"In the beginning, there were rich guys, and then that Bible had something to say..."

But, there are so many examples of this today it's hardly worth noting. Sporting stadiums with their corporate names come to mind now.

The windows really are stories! I didn't realize, I figured they were more "symbolic." It's incredible how much detail they went into. I can't even imagine what it must have been like to try and decifer what the windows meant!

These windows are amazing! It is so impressive to me that these people could be so detailed and thorough in creating every window. Each window tells a story, and that is very cool. There is such symbolism and importance in this form of art. The artists that created it were very talented. It is great that we can admire this art even today. I think the stained glass adds a lot to the cathedral...it makes it more beautiful and impressive.

I think that the stained glass is very beautiful. It's hard to imagine all the time and effort put into these. They must have been so devoted to their work.

Hey! I know this is kind of off topic but I was wondering which blog platform are you using
for this website? I'm getting tired of Wordpress because I've had issues with hackers and I'm looking at options for another platform. I would be awesome if you could point me in the direction of a good platform.
